Catch of the Day
Alaska's brown bears are kings of the Alaska wildlands. Despite their size and capacity to prey on terrestrial animals, they mostly feed on vegetation and fish. During the summers they scout out prime fishing spots along Alaska's great rivers and feast on huge salmon runs. This isn't gluttony—the bears that don't fatten up may not survive hibernation through the brutal Alaska winter.
Karla Morreira's painting captures the Alaska spirit in a unique style. She mixes watercolors used in her paintings and creates thick foundation textures using heavy rock salt and gum arabic. Karla lives in Chugiak, Alaska.
